Aberfeldy

The town of Aberfeldy was established in the late 18th Century. It grew around Wade's Bridge which was the first bridge to cross the River Tay in 1733. The bridge was built by the English General Wade after Bonnie Prince Charlie's rebellion of 1745.

Aberfeldy was originally a mill town and visitors can still watch Scottish delicacies being made at the Breadalbane Bakery.

The poet Robert Burns wrote the famous 'Birks of Aberfeldy' about the area around the Falls of Moness and you can still experience what he writes about by walking up the Falls where the scenery is fantastic.

The village of Weem lies approximately a mile from Aberfeldy. Here you will find Castle Menzies, a good example of a 16th century 'Z' plan fortified house, which you can explore. There are also lovely walks behind Castle Menzies which can be accessed at the entrance to Castle Menzies. The castle provided hospitality to Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746, and was the seat of the Chief of Clan Menzies until 1918.
