Shona attended Duncan of Jordanstone school of Art in Dundee and Grays school of Art in Aberdeen, where she attained a BA Honours degree in textile design and a Post Graduate Diploma in surface decoration and constructed textiles. She is from the small village of Dull near Aberfeldy, where she still lives.

Shona is inspired by treescapes and landscapes, loving the repeating patterns and units, all having slight variations. These can be squares of fields, bales of straw or groups of trees. The weather and seasons bring their own moods, airy, light, happy or dark and ominous, shifts of light, colour and patterns through the landscape. It can also bring noises loud, reckless, soft and gentle or silent except for small bird song. The seasons bring changes in colour with leaves changing as they flip in a breeze. Each variety of tree is different and has a different gait as it sits in the landscape.
