Sonas Maclean

Sonas graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with BA (Hons) Drawing & Painting. She has received the Elizabeth Greenshields Award, 1990 & 1995; Dunfermline District Arts Council - commission; Ian Massie Memorial Quaich, 1997 and 2001.

Sonas was brought up in Caithness where she learned an appreciation of the sea and love of coastal scenes and small harbours. Sonas is also well known for her bird paintings. In her paintings she aims to capture the character of the birds and is captivated by the beautiful colours & shapes they make.

In her work, she combines colour, composition and tones to distil the harmonies and moods observed in the landscape around her. She finds the way the land meets the sea fascinating and compelling. Her images are her hiding places, where she can escape to a sense of freedom and peace.
